Attachment-Based Therapy in Pennsylvania
Understand the patterns shaping how you relate to yourself and others.
You may know that something isn’t working without fully understanding why. Maybe you worry about disappointing people, need reassurance that everything is okay, have difficulty trusting others, or keep finding yourself in relationship patterns you don’t quite understand.
As an attachment-based therapist, I help adults better understand the relationship patterns, emotional responses, and ways of coping that may have developed through earlier experiences. Together, we can get curious about what’s underneath—not to blame the past, but to understand how your experiences may be shaping the way you feel and relate today.
Our relationships shape us.
From our earliest relationships, we begin developing expectations about ourselves and other people.
Will someone be there when I need them?
Are my feelings too much?
Is it safe to depend on someone?
What happens when someone is upset with me?
Do I have to take care of everyone else to stay connected?
These expectations often operate outside of our awareness. What once helped us maintain connection or protect ourselves can become a pattern that follows us into adulthood, even when it no longer serves us.
Attachment patterns can show up in unexpected places.
Attachment isn’t only about romantic relationships. It can influence how you respond to conflict, how easily you trust other people, how comfortable you feel expressing your needs, and how you experience yourself in relationships.
You might notice yourself:
worrying that someone is upset with you
seeking reassurance but struggling to actually feel reassured
avoiding conflict or saying yes when you want to say no
feeling responsible for other people's emotions
becoming overwhelmed by distance or changes in someone’s behavior
pulling away when relationships begin to feel too vulnerable
struggling to identify what you want or need
repeating similar relationship dynamics despite wanting something different
You don't need to know your “attachment style” before coming to therapy. In fact, the goal isn't to fit you neatly into a category. It's to understand your particular way of experiencing yourself and other people and how that way of relating came to make sense.
Therapy that looks beneath the pattern.
In attachment-based therapy, we don't only ask “How do I stop doing this?”
We also become curious about “Why does this happen in the first place?”
Together, we can begin noticing the expectations, emotions, fears, and ways of protecting yourself that may be operating underneath the patterns causing you distress.
And because attachment patterns develop within relationships, they can also emerge within therapy itself. The therapeutic relationship can provide an opportunity to notice these patterns as they happen, understand them with greater compassion and curiosity, and experiment with new ways of relating.
The goal isn't to become perfectly secure.
It’s to develop greater freedom in how you respond.
As you understand yourself more deeply, you may become better able to recognize what you're feeling, tolerate uncertainty in relationships, communicate your needs, set boundaries without as much guilt, and respond to other people based on what's happening now rather than what you've learned to expect. Over time, relationships can begin to feel less governed by fear, avoidance, or old expectations—and more flexible, authentic, and connected.
