Frequently Asked Questions
How Therapy Works
How long are sessions?
Sessions are typically usually around 55 minutes long
How frequent will my appointments be?
I recommend patients start with weekly appointments to build momentum and rapport. The benefit of continued weekly sessions is the ability to go beyond the "catch up" of what happened since our last meeting. Weekly sessions or even twice weekly sessions allow us to go deeper. However, you may also choose to have biweekly sessions, especially once you are starting to see improvements and feel weekly is not necessary anymore. I have also seen clients once every three or four weeks once they are seeing significant improvements and simply want to maintain their progress. Deciding on frequency is a collaborative discussion between therapist and patient.
How long does therapy take?
Probably not the answer you want, but... it depends! I have some people I have seen for several months and some I have been seeing for years. We work together for as long as it takes to get you to where you want to be.
What can I expect in my first session?
Our first session focuses on learning about you and your unique story, what brings you to therapy now, your goals, and any other relevant information. Sometimes this information-gathering phase can last two sessions.
Is everything I talk about kept confidential?
Everything you share in session remains confidential, unless you mention a risk of harm to your self or other(s), child/elder abuse, or court order.
How can I ensure privacy during our virtual sessions?
I use a HIPAA-compliant telehealth platform. I recommend finding a space where you feel you have privacy and the ability to speak freely during our sessions. Some clients take sessions from their cars to help with this.
Cost and Insurance
Do you accept insurance?
I accept most major insurances. I am in network with Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield, Capital Blue, Aetna, and United.
What if I don't want to use my insurance?
You don't have to. In this case, you would pay out-of-pocket. Some people opt out of using their insurance because using insurance requires that I give a mental health diagnosis. Some individuals prefer to pay out-of-pocket to keep this information off of their permanent medical records.
How much does therapy cost if I don't use my insurance?
If you are choosing to pay out-of-pocket, one therapy session costs $200.
What if I want to use my insurance, but you are not in-network?
You would pay out-of-pocket, and I would give you what is called a "superbill" to submit to your insurance company. Your insurance company may reimburse you up to a certain amount for services. Be sure to check with your insurance company first.
